End of an Era: Pelican Pub Bids Farewell to Beer
The Final Pour
Today, on 15th August 2024, Mysuru says goodbye to a cherished tradition as Pelican Pub, the iconic watering hole, pours its last draught beer. From tomorrow, 16th August, the beloved pub will transition into a restaurant, marking the end of an era for countless Mysureans who have called this place their second home.
A Gathering Place for Generations
Pelican Pub has been more than just a spot for a drink; it has been a gathering place for friends, a sanctuary for the weary, and a hub of laughter and camaraderie. For decades, it was the go-to spot for anyone looking to unwind and share stories over a pint. Its unique atmosphere, characterized by its welcoming charm, made it a favorite haunt for locals and visitors alike.
The Legacy of Ponoo Muthanna
At the heart of Pelican Pub’s success was its legendary proprietor, Ponoo Muthanna, fondly known as Ponoo Uncle. Though Ponoo passed away recently at the age of 86, his spirit has continued to live on through the warmth and hospitality that defined the pub. Ponoo’s philosophy of life—living in the moment, spreading kindness, and encouraging joy—set the tone for the pub’s atmosphere, creating a space where everyone felt at home.
The Rituals We’ll Miss
Ponoo’s presence at Pelican was unmistakable. Dressed in his signature all-white attire, he had a way of making everyone feel like family. His nightly ritual of ringing a traditional bell to signal last orders became a beloved tradition for many patrons, a sound that now marks the end of an era.
Pelican Pub was one of the few places in Mysuru where you could enjoy a perfectly chilled draught beer, served with a side of warmth and wisdom from Ponoo himself. Despite being a teetotaler, Ponoo’s meticulous attention to detail ensured that every pint was poured to perfection. His presence added a layer of respect to the experience—patrons knew better than to overindulge in front of him.
Transition to a New Chapter
As the pub transitions into a restaurant, many will remember Pelican as the place where they laughed, cried, and created memories over a glass of beer. The decision to stop serving beer comes as a significant shift, marking the end of an era that has touched the lives of many across generations.
A Lasting Legacy
Pelican Pub’s transformation is a poignant reminder of the changes that time brings, yet the legacy of the pub—and Ponoo Muthanna—will continue to live on. While the beer taps may run dry, the essence of what made Pelican special will remain in the hearts of all who experienced it.
