Sri Basappa: Mysuru’s Beloved Postman of 1907-08

In the early 1900s, when letters were the lifeline of communication and the postman was a cherished figure, one name stood out in Mysuru—Sri Basappa. As a dedicated postman at the Mysuru Post Office, Basappa became more than just a messenger; he was a symbol of punctuality, sincerity, and community spirit.

Neither the scorching heat of summer nor the relentless monsoon rains could deter Basappa from his duties. His unwavering commitment ensured that letters reached their destinations on time, every time. Basappa transformed the routine task of delivering mail into an engaging and lively affair, often indulging in spirited conversations with the residents at every doorstep.

Fondly known as “Post Mama” among the children, Basappa’s charm and friendliness made him a beloved figure in the community. His lively interactions and warm personality brightened the day for many Mysoreans, turning each mail delivery into a delightful event.

Such dedication did not go unnoticed. The then king, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar, held Basappa in high esteem. Recognizing his exceptional service and the joy he brought to the people, the king ordered the installation of a statue in Basappa’s honor. This gesture was a testament to Basappa’s impact on the community and his exemplary work ethic.

Sri Basappa’s legacy lives on as a reminder of the importance of dedication and community spirit. His story is a cherished part of Mysuru’s history, inspiring future generations to serve with passion and integrity.
