Mysuru Akashvani Celebrates 90 Years: A Legacy of Broadcasting Excellence on 100.6 FM

The Birth of India’s First Private Radio Station

On September 10, 1935, India’s first private radio broadcaster, Radio Mysuru, made its historic debut. Dr. M.V. Gopalaswamy, a Professor of Psychology at Maharaja’s College, launched the station using a 30-watt transmitter set up at his residence. This modest beginning marked a new era in Indian broadcasting. The first broadcast featured a memorable performance by Carnatic music legend Mysuru Vasudevacharya, accompanied by HV Rama Rao on violin and Venkatesh Devar on the Mridangam.

Transition to Royal Patronage

In 1942, the Mysuru Maharaja assumed control of the radio station, bringing it under royal patronage. It was during this time that Narayana Kasturi, a renowned writer and journalist, took over the management. Kasturi not only steered the station through its early years but also gave it its iconic name—Akashvani. The name would later become synonymous with India’s national radio network.

The Move to a Permanent Home

By 1944, Mysuru Akashvani had shifted to its current location, further cementing its role as a cultural and educational hub in the state. On April 1, 1950, the station, once owned by the state government, was formally integrated into the All India Radio (AIR) network, marking its transition to national prominence.

Pioneering Educational Broadcasting

Over the decades, Mysuru Akashvani has pioneered numerous initiatives that set it apart in Indian radio history. It was the first to broadcast educational programmes specifically for high school students and became the first station in South India to air Hindi lessons, expanding access to language learning. These efforts underscored the station’s commitment to education and community enrichment.
