Gorillas Arrive at Mysuru Zoo from Blackpool, UK
Mysuru Zoo has welcomed two Western lowland gorillas, Meisie and Moanda, from Blackpool Zoo, UK, as part of a global conservation initiative. The primates are currently under quarantine and will soon adapt to their new environment before going on public display.

A Journey for Conservation Meisie and Moanda were recommended for relocation by the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) as part of a broader effort to strengthen the genetic diversity of the international gorilla population. The move involved meticulous planning, including extensive health checks and coordination among various agencies. The gorillas traveled on a specialist flight from the UK to Bengaluru before reaching Mysuru Zoo.
State-of-the-Art Facility Mysuru Zoo has built a specially designed enclosure to accommodate its new residents. The habitat features climate-controlled spaces, multiple enrichment zones, climbing structures, and an indoor gym to meet the gorillas’ complex behavioral needs. The design ensures their well-being while allowing visitors to observe them in a naturalistic setting.
Collaboration with Blackpool Zoo The transition has been supported by experts from Blackpool Zoo, including keepers who traveled with Meisie and Moanda to assist Mysuru Zoo staff in their acclimatization. Maria Webster, Animal Registrar at Blackpool Zoo, emphasized the importance of this relocation in global conservation efforts. She noted that while the move was bittersweet, the gorillas would play a crucial role in sustaining the species in managed care.
A New Chapter for Mysuru Zoo With the arrival of these gorillas, Mysuru Zoo continues to expand its contribution to global wildlife conservation. Visitors can look forward to seeing Meisie and Moanda once they complete their quarantine period and settle into their new home.
